The effort to replicate Philadelphia’s Science Leadership Academy hinges on teachers like Karthik Subburam, a 41-year old former engineer being asked to completely overhaul his classroom practice in an innovative school. The troubled Philadelphia school district is attempting to replicate Science Leadership Academy, which embraces an inquiry-driven, project-based, technology-infused style. But at SLA@Beeber, it’s clear that’s presented some classroom challenges. It was a controversial gamble by Philadelphia Superintendent William R. Hite to expand the innovative school model.
